Chinese-English Negotiations Competition 2020
MCLS is proud to announce the Herbert Smith Freehills Chinese-English Negotiations Competition 2020!
This is a unique competition that gives interested students the opportunity to get a sense of negotiations in an international commercial legal context. The competition tests participants’ bilingual abilities, problem solving and communication skills as they navigate through a hypothetical fact scenario.
Business relationships in China are negotiated at each interaction, much like everywhere else in the world. Negotiators need to be able to apply a range of strategies and communication styles, as well as handle a multitude of unforeseen events.
The negotiations will take place over Zoom between two teams of two students, one lawyer and one client. Communication within teams (lawyer to client) is to be in English but communication between teams (lawyer to lawyer) must be in Mandarin Chinese.
During each round, teams will discuss the various issues that arise from the given fact scenario, which revolve around a contractual or commercial situation. The aim of the Competition is to reach an agreement that best fulfils the client’s instructions as outlined in the brief.
