You simply cannot live in Melbourne without trying it out at least once and seeing what it’s all about. There is so much more to brunch food than avocado on toast and eggs benedicts. Aside from the food, brunch is also a great way to catch up with friends and family, at any time between (usually) 8am to 2pm (so whether you’re an early bird or likes to sleep in, it doesn’t matter). Plus, brunch places almost always have amazing coffee to go with your meal.
Here is a list of brunch spots near MLS:
114 Berkeley St, Carlton
@7seedscoffee
Opened in 2007 as a cafe and roastery in Carlton, the name Seven Seeds is now synonymous with Melbourne coffee and Melbourne brunch. In 2016, the roastery relocated to a dedicated location elsewhere, greatly increasing the cafe area. Even so, if you want to avoid lines for the cafe, visit during off-peak hours. Try out the Benedict Waffle, the (what we call) quintessential Seven Seeds dish. While menus come and go, this waffle has remained through it all – that must be saying something!
With it located 1 minute away from MLS in a converted warehouse (in typical Melbourne fashion), it is also a favourite spot for MLS students to grab their caffeine hit in between tutorials. If you’re looking for more Seven Seeds coffee, there’s Brother Baba Budan (@brotherbababudan), Traveller (@travellercoffee) and a list of cafes that also use their beans that you can view here.
Another favourite at the doorstep of the law school, Stovetop, with its modern interiors, boasts great food and coffee, bubbly staff and a bustling atmosphere. Their menu always includes some Asian fusion dishes, and don’t forget the weekly special’s board on the wall. They have wraps and sandwiches made fresh daily for your on-the-go needs, and delicious sweets to pair with your coffee. These do go quickly, so be sure to head in early to secure them.
71 Bouverie St, Carlton
@humbleraysmelb
“The design of Humble Rays combines the calm and relaxing tones of eggshell blue and mint green with zany and cheerful patterns, forcing the most serious person to crack a smile” Humble Rays
With a very bright and bubbly atmosphere, Humble Rays, since opening its doors in 2016, has become another favourite in the Melbourne brunch scene. While there are classic brunch menu items with western flavours, Humble Rays specialises in Asian Fusion. Asian ingredients will turn up in some unexpected places and challenge your expectations: miso butter, yuzu hollandaise, Asian herbs. No shame in taking a snap for Instagram before you dig in, especially when every dish is so colourful and presented with such care and thought. Their menu boasts variety and unique twists on the classics, and they even have a dedicated dessert menu for all the sweet tooths out there.
261-263 Queensberry, Carlton
@floviefloristcafe
Part florist, part cafe, Flovie Florist Cafe puts a spin on your classic brunch experience. Decorated with a pastel colour scheme, it radiates calm and serenity, and is a common event space for functions.
Flovie is known for its very unique offerings of drinks, especially its Rose Tea Latte, Butterfly Pea Tea Latte and Roma Holiday (a hazelnut hot chocolate served with a small brownie). Their menu holds a healthy variety from classic brunch favourites, to again Asian Fusion dishes. The difficult thing will also be deciding what to order!
115 Hardware Street, Melbourne
@whitemojo
Another coffee roastery/cafe brand, White Mojo’s CBD location is located on the well-known Hardware Lane. While it is the furthest from the law school, it is conveniently located at the heart of the CBD amongst many other great brunch spots. White Mojo stands out not only for its in-house roasted coffee, but also for a menu that draws inspiration from different parts of the world, reflecting the melting pot of cultures that Melbourne is. Get the camera ready to capture all the vibrant colours.
